The earlier you learn the importance of nutrition the better.
However, the younger you are the less you may have control over what you eat.
Guardians and caretakers are often the individuals who purchase household groceries and handle finances.
My mother was healthier than my father, and was more cautious about what we consumed.
Taste plays an important role in making nutritional choices.
Growing up we had meat and pasta meals with sauces because they could last more than one night, with our family size.
That was the focus. What could stretch for most of the week.
There was a time my family fell on hard times, and we could only afford beans and boxed cornbread.
Every now and then we could have box macaroni and cheese, and this became a food reward for me, even into my adult life.
As I got older, I really liked processed foods like boxed meals and potato chips.
They are often easy to prepare, especially since I had a busy life with school, work, and a child.
It was not until I got sick, that I really looked at what I was consuming.
Those who oversee purchasing and making food choices for the household should really try to be cautious of what they are getting.
These decisions will more and likely shape younger children, and teens in the same household, preferences.
Currently, I have a six-year-old and a seventeen-year-old.
It was important that they knew the importance of breakfast.
I noticed they were both very hungry after the school day and learned they were not eating before school, and not enough at lunch.

I started making sure we have breakfast in the morning.
Some weeks it is bran muffins, another time it was smoothies.
I encouraged them to eat a balanced lunch and purchased healthy after-school snack options.
There has been a great reduction in their hunger levels by dinner time. I have also seen them having a desire for healthier options when we eat away from home.
My oldest loves water, while my youngest has a love of vegetables.
I had to be the example and guide them on a healthier option.
